Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth: Slingsby village plans for this weekend

It seems only a moment ago that Slingsby came together for a joyous weekend to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth. Now, we invite you to join together again over the course of the next few days to mourn her passing and give thanks for her life of service and faithfulness to the nation and the commonwealth.

Sunday 18th September 6pm Service of Prayer and Reflection, All Saints church

Do join us for this short reflective service, which will finish in good time for people to return home or join neighbourhood or communal plans to observe a minute’s silence at 8pm

Monday 19th September from 10.30am, Slingsby Sports & Social Club

The club will open from 10.30am to allow anyone who would like to watch the funeral from 11am to gather together and watch on the big screen. Tea and coffee will also be available.

The church bells will be tolled from 10am onwards. If anyone can help with a 5 minute stint (no training required) please sign the rota at the back of church.

A book of condolence, prayers and candles is at the back of Slingsby church, where it will be open all week, until the end of next Tuesday, when the official period of mourning ends.

Thank you,

Slingsby Church and Slingsby Sports & Social Club

Slingsby Produce Show 2022

This year the produce show will be held this Saturday 17th September from 1pm.

Please come along and support the village – there are several classes to enter from baking to photography. Winners will be announced on the day and all produce will be in the village hall on display. Don’t forget the usual afternoon teas, home-made cakes, tea, coffee, excellent raffle with plenty of prizes, and of course a good natter! A lovely traditional village event not to be missed!

Free Pick Your Own Apples and Pears

We have received the following message from Liz and Andrew Wilson at Brickyard Farm:

We have an abundance of apples and pears at Brickyard Farm and don’t want to see them go to waste so if any villagers wish to come and pick some, they can for free!

Please park at the end of our driveway next to the grass and walk down the drive, the apple and small pear trees are on the right and the larger pear trees are on the left.
Please message me or Andrew Wilson for directions if you’re not sure where we are.

Eco Fair Malton 24 September

24 September 2022, 10am to 2pm, the Milton Rooms, Malton

Ryedale Environment Group’s 2nd Annual Eco Fair returns to a new venue this September.

Kate Stansfield writes:

Are you concerned about the very real effects of climate change? Worried about rising energy costs and what the future will look like for your children and grandchildren? Perhaps excited by the possibilities offered by a greener economy, passionate about our beautiful natural environment, and interested in protecting it for future generations?

Whatever your interest in the environment, come along and find out more about the projects and businesses doing inspiring things all over Ryedale.

Following the success of its first ever Eco Fair in Pickering last September, Ryedale Environmental Group is delighted to announce that plans are underway for an even bigger, event in a new venue.

Designed to showcase all the ways in which local businesses and organisations can help Ryedale’s residents and visitors to enjoy a greener, healthier lifestyle, this year’s fair coincides with the national Big Green Week celebration, and is to be held in the Milton Rooms, Malton, on Saturday 24th September, 10am–2pm.

So far, over 20 stalls have already been confirmed, with highlights to include:

– Stalls from organisations such as the Dragonfly Society, Pickering Hedgehog Rescue, Friends of the Earth and the RSPB.
– Spotlight on a number of campaigns, including the national Refill scheme.
– Stalls from low/zero-waste shops.

– Apple Juice and Morsbag projects
– Info on the “20 is Plenty” campaign.
– Local handmade crafts.

– Corner for kids & young people with science experiments, wood crafts & more!

– Village environmental groups sharing the ways they’re working to minimise waste, save energy and provide valuable community services such as Repair Cafés and Give or Take Days.

REG is also keen to encourage youth engagement at this event and welcomes ideas or contacts. Get in touch at [email protected] if you can help!
