Ken Overton – Obituary

We were very saddened to hear of the death of Ken Overton on Friday 9th March. Ken and Myra lived at The Grange on Railway Street for about 15 years until they moved to Wintringham late in 2010. Ken was a lovely man who threw himself wholeheartedly at everything he did, whether it was helping the homeless in York, singing with Terrington Village Choir, building his Dax sports car, helping with the village school or chairing the Ryedale Festival. All of us who knew him were aware of his generosity, dedication, sense of fun and loyalty. He and Myra made a lovely and devoted couple and he will be much missed.

Ken Overton was Chairman of the Ryedale Festival for five years until 2010. During this time the Festival consolidated its reputation, both nationally and internationally.
On Tuesday 20th March a large congregation gathered at St. Peter’s Church, Norton for a memorial service for Ken.  The service was conducted by Lieut. Colonel Kirby of the Salvation Army and Ken’s wife Myra and her family gave touching tributes to a man whose energy and enthusiasm had enlivened many.

God for Harry, Slingsby and St George!

Slingsby 23 April – Today is not just St George’sDay. Today is also William Shakespeare’s birthday, the 30th anniversary of the launch of the ZX Spectrum and World Book night. If you are struggling to see the connection between these events, you are not the only one. No one, as far as we can tell, has thought to publish a history of St George as an e-book in the language of the Bard (astonishing, I know). Anyhow, now the website editor has your attention, may I suggest that you spare a thought for Slingsby’s very own dragon-slaying medieval knight, William Wyville, who still lies in All Saints Church. He may have lost his feet and his dog, but, by George, he refuses to give up his sponsored lie-in in aid of the Church tower appeal!

Through Lichfield’s Lens – Photo Exhibition

An exhibition of Lord Lichfield’s photographs has gone on display at Nunnington hall. The world première exhibition, due to run until the 8th May, is made up of images taken from the late photographer Polaroid boards that have never been seen outside of his London studio.

In the days before digital photography, Polaroid images were often taken at shoots to test that lighting and exposure were correct. Most of the time test shots were discarded by photographers, however Lord Lichfield kept the best ones for his studio boards.

By the time of his death in 2005, over 2000 Polaroid images, from nearly every major shoot he had done between 1971 to 2005,  covered the changing room walls in his studio.

‘Through Lichfield’s Lens’ runs at Nunnington Hall until May 8th. More details can be found HERE
