Photo of the Month: Slingsby football team 1947

Slingsby Football Team in May 1947

Last month we had cricket, this month we have a wonderful photo of Slingsby football squad in May 1947 sent to us by Rob Racenis.

Rob says ‘Amongst the players is my late Father in law, Baz Tasker. Who, it is said, was a right wiz on the pitch’.

Many thanks Rob for the great photograph. If the photo is anything to go by, we might have done better in Euro 2012 sending the Slingsby squad of 1947.

Ryedale Festival coming to Slingsby soon!

The excitement is mounting amongst the enthusiastic band of volunteers who help to make the Ryedale Festival happen. Another stunning festival with a fabulous array of performers and events begins on Friday 13th July. This year, the excitement has spread to Slingsby, where we host a Festival concert for the first time in about two decades. We are indeed fortunate to be welcoming the brilliant young Iranian harpsichord virtuoso Mahan Esfahani (Monday 16 July, 11 am in All Saints Church). There are still tickets left for this unique opportunity to hear a world class musician here in Slingsby. But don’t delay – contact the Box Office on 01751 475777 (we recommend you call between 9.30 am and 12.30 pm Monday to Friday) or email: [email protected] .

While a good number of this year’s concerts have already sold out (to be expected, given the reputation of the ever-popular Ryedale Festival), there are still tickets remaining for some stand-out events:

Hear the gorgeous Kate Royal singing at Duncombe Park in the opening gala concert (13 July 8pm).  We’re so lucky to have an international super-star of her calibre here in Ryedale and, with a glass of champagne included to get you in the mood (from 7.15pm) this looks a real treat.

On 21 July you can enjoy a feast of French music up the road in Hovingham (All Saints Church), with concerts at 11 am and 3.30 pm.

On 22 July at 3pm the brilliant and innovative Calefax Reed Quintet plays in beautiful Botton village.

On 25 July at 7pm, Iestyn Davies will be treating us to lovely English songs in the chapel at Castle Howard as part of our Triple Concert, before appearing as soloist in the Proms at the Albert Hall.

Whatever your musical tastes – from cool jazz with BBC artist Gwilym Simcock’s recently formed Lighthouse Trio in the Kirk Theatre Pickering, to the Russian Orthodox tradition as sung by the Seven Saints Bulgarian Choir in Ampleforth Abbey church – indulge them on your own doorstep in Ryedale this summer.
