Malton Museum lecture 15th February 2017

Friends of Malton Museum lecture on Wednesday 15th February 2017 at 7.30 pm in the Library, East Wing, Malton School, Middlecave Road, Malton.

Dr Sophie Forgan from the Captain Cook Museum in Whitby, will talk on “Art and the Kangaroo”. Admission is free to Friends, others are welcome at a charge of £3. The Friends say:-

“Just over two years ago, the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich acquired George Stubbs’ famous ‘Portrait of a Kangaroo’ (1772), together with its sister painting of a dingo.  Stubbs painted what became the iconic image of a kangaroo, though he had never seen a live kangaroo and had no idea of their natural environment!

“The talk traces the background to the creation of this famous painting, the problems of depicting exotic animals no one had seen before, and why Stubbs’ image is particularly successful.  Succeeding artists depicted kangaroos in their natural habitat and the variety of images helped to stimulate a veritable passion for Australian mammals in late 18th and 19th century Britain.”
